Everyday Runners

Meet

Caroline Eagleson

A woman in a wheelchair, dressed in athletic clothing, pushing herself up a paved incline on a trail with a stone wall and greenery in the background.

a regular at her local Parkrun Saturday mornings

and the first runner’s story from everyday people that run

Caroline was born with a neurological condition known as spina bifida

It symptoms vary but in Caroline’s case she was born with no feeling in her lower legs & feet

Despite this, she was 25 before using a wheelchair for mobility

I recently painted
Caroline’s running portrait

A painting of a woman in a wheelchair wearing a blindfold, black athletic clothing, and white sneakers, sitting outdoors with rocks and greenery in the background.

I listened to her story ..

and learnt firsthand just how inspiring her running story is. You can read her full story in the link below.

Caroline’s running snapshot

  • I’m 49

I have a fulltime managerial position at Seven Network

I was born with spina bifida

From birth I had no feeling in my lower legs and feet

I could walk until I was 25 and have used a wheelchair for mobility since

  • I wanted to move and be active but also wanted to do something that was “self-contained” – no special equipment required

  • 5kms

  • Energised!!

  • I’m not sure hooked, but the feeling afterwards of accomplishment – no matter what your time is – is addictive

  • Hills!!! Literally!!

  • When the terrain is harder than I expect and I need more help I feel more obviously impacted by my disability and that becomes a mental struggle to over-come

  • Broken finger-nails – not your average running injury

  • I used to be envious of runners.

Being able to quickly lace up a pair of shoes and get out the door for a run

  • A standout memory was Run for the Kids - 14.4kms

The distance, the atmosphere, the people I did it with. Just fantastic!
